In the village of Selja, right by the Pärnu–Rakvere road, stands an architectural gem – the historic Selja schoolhouse, built in 1890. It has stood empty since 2011, but that’s all about to change. This dignified building is getting a brand-new purpose: a permanent military history exhibition and educational centre.
So, where to begin? First things first – making the house visible again. Over the years, the beautiful fieldstone walls and shy windows had been hidden behind a jungle of lilac bushes. It was time to let the sunlight in!
And so it happened – in the summer of 2024, museum friends and the local community came together to hold our very first volunteer clean-up day. Under bright sunshine, the hard work began, and with it, a bright beginning for a lasting project – the Pärnumaa Military History Centre.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part!
